How to Burn a Candle Properly (To Prevent Tunneling and Soot)

Knowing how to burn a candle properly is the difference between a jar that melts evenly to the bottom and one that tunnels down the middle, leaving a thick ring of wasted wax. It only takes a few habits.

The first burn matters most

Wax has a memory. On the very first light, let the candle burn until the melted pool reaches the edge of the jar. For most candles that's about one hour for every inch of diameter, often two to four hours. Blow it out early and the wax will keep melting only to that smaller ring every time after. That's tunneling.

Only light a new candle when you have time to let it finish that first full melt.

Trim the wick every time

Before each burn, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. A long wick makes a tall, flickering flame that throws soot, blackens the glass, and burns through wax faster. A wick trimmer is handy, but nail clippers work. Remove any trimmings or burnt bits from the wax before lighting.

Don't burn too long

Keep burns to about four hours at a time. Past that, the wick can mushroom, the flame grows, and the jar can get very hot. Let the candle cool for a couple of hours before relighting.

Watch where you burn

Drafts from fans, vents, open windows, and busy hallways make the flame dance. A dancing flame burns unevenly and produces soot. Choose a still spot on a flat, heat-safe surface.

Put it out gently

A snuffer or a wick dipper puts the flame out without a puff of smoke or splattered wax. If you blow it out, do it softly. Keep the wick centered while the wax is still soft.

Know when to stop

Stop burning when about 1/2 inch of wax remains in the bottom. Below that, the glass can overheat.

A quick checklist

Full melt pool on the first burn. Wick trimmed to 1/4 inch. No more than four hours at a time. No drafts. Stop at 1/2 inch.
