How Long Do Candles Last? (And How to Make Yours Last Longer)
Burn hours, shelf life, and the habits that decide whether your candle lasts a month or a season.

Two different questions hide inside this one: how long a candle burns, and how long a candle keeps. The answers are unrelated, and both are better than you might expect.
How long a candle burns
Burn time depends on wax weight, wick count, and how you burn it. As a rough guide for well-made jar candles:
- An 8oz single-wick candle: around 40 to 55 hours. - A 14oz three-wick candle: around 60 to 80 hours, spread across three wicks burning at once. - Wax melts: roughly 8 to 12 hours of scent per cube, and you can re-melt until the scent fades.
Three-wick candles burn faster per hour but scent a larger room, so the trade is usually worth it. The number on any label is an estimate — your habits move it more than the wax does.
What shortens a candle's life
The biggest thief is tunneling: blowing the candle out before the melt pool reaches the edge, so the wax hardens into a tunnel that wastes the outer ring. One short first burn can cost you a third of the jar. The second thief is an untrimmed wick, which burns hot and fast and eats wax without giving you more scent.
How to make a candle last longer
- Burn until the pool reaches the edge, every time — especially the first time. - Trim the wick to a quarter inch before each burn. - Keep burns to three or four hours at a stretch; longer sessions overheat the jar and burn wax faster. - Store it with a lid on, out of sunlight. Heat and light fade both color and fragrance.
Do candles expire?
Not exactly, but they fade. A candle stored well — cool, dark, lidded — keeps its scent for a year or two, sometimes longer. A candle left open on a sunny shelf can lose its top notes in a few months. The wax itself is fine essentially forever; it is the fragrance that has a clock on it.
If you find an old candle that smells faint cold, burn it once before judging. The scent often lives deeper in the jar than the surface suggests.
