How to Make Your Candles Smell Stronger (Without Buying New Ones)
If your candle barely scents the room, the fix is usually free: wick length, burn time, room size, and a little patience.

A candle that barely smells is usually not a bad candle. It is a candle being asked to do something it cannot, or being stopped from doing what it can. Here is how to tell the difference.
1. Let the melt pool finish
The scent comes from the pool of melted wax, not the flame. If you blow a candle out before the wax has melted edge to edge, you have released a fraction of the fragrance it had ready. First burn especially: give it two to three hours, until the pool reaches the glass.
2. Trim the wick
A long wick makes a big, sooty flame that burns off fragrance before it can travel. A quarter inch is the target. Trim before every burn, not just the first one, and the scent will be cleaner and stronger.
3. Match the candle to the room
An 8oz single-wick candle is built for a bedroom, bathroom, or office. Put it in an open-plan living room and it will lose. Large rooms want larger candles — a 14oz three-wick — or two smaller ones at opposite ends. This is the most common reason a candle "doesn't smell like anything."
4. Keep it away from drafts
A candle near a vent, window, or busy doorway sends its scent everywhere except where you are. Drafts also make the flame flicker, which burns wax unevenly. Still air, center of the room, away from traffic.
5. Put the lid on between burns
Fragrance evaporates from the surface of the wax even when the candle is cold. A lid — or even a small plate — keeps the top notes in the jar instead of in your closet.
6. Give a new candle time
Some candles smell faint on the first burn and bloom on the second or third, once the wax has fully cycled. Judge a candle on its third evening, not its first hour.
When it really is the candle
If you have done all of the above and the room still smells like nothing, the candle itself is under-scented. Wax blend matters here: a coconut paraffin blend holds and releases fragrance differently than a hard soy wax, which is one reason we pour with it. A good candle in a right-sized room should make itself known within half an hour.
