What Is Scent Throw? (And Why Some Candles Smell Stronger)

What is scent throw? It's simply how well a candle's fragrance travels into the room. Candle makers talk about two kinds.

Cold throw

Cold throw is how a candle smells when it's unlit, like when you lift the lid in a shop. It's a good first impression, but it doesn't always predict how the candle will perform.

Hot throw

Hot throw is how the candle smells while burning, once the melt pool has formed and warm wax releases fragrance into the air. This is what most people really care about.

Why some candles smell stronger

**Fragrance load.** The amount of fragrance in the wax. More isn't always better. Every wax can only hold so much, and overloading can cause soot or oily "sweating."

**Curing time.** Freshly poured candles need time, often a week or two, for fragrance to bind with the wax. Rushed candles can smell weaker.

**Wick and melt pool.** A wider melt pool releases more scent. That's one reason larger multi-wick candles tend to fill a room faster than small single-wick jars.

**The fragrance itself.** Some notes, like citrus and fresh florals, are naturally light and fleeting. Others, like vanilla, amber, and woods, are heavier and linger.

Getting the best throw at home

Let the first burn reach the edges of the jar so the full surface releases scent.

Give it 30 minutes to an hour to build.

Match candle size to room size. A small jar in a big open room will feel faint.

Close doors and avoid strong drafts, which pull scent away (and cause soot).

Keep the wick trimmed so the flame stays steady.

"Nose blindness" is real

If you've been in the room the whole time, your nose adapts and the scent can seem to fade. Step out for a few minutes and walk back in. You'll often find it's stronger than you thought.
